Carl Winans, Co-Founder and CEO
Carl Winans is an entrepreneur, designer, inventor, and technology junkie with a love of startups, branding, and travel. He builds businesses, invents products, has a passion for thoughtful design, and enjoys the process of making ideas happen.
1. What experience or person encouraged you to be an entrepreneur?
Unconsciously, I think it was my father. He always had a small business or side hustle going when I was a kid. I didn’t think of him as an entrepreneur (I don’t think either of us knew the word), he just had a lot of “jobs.” We never talked about business, so I think it was just something I absorbed without knowing.
My first “business” was selling my homework in 7th grade until I got shutdown when another student, who was upset, had turned me in because I was distorting the grading curve.
My second business had me designing, pressing, and selling t-shirts out of my dorm room at Michigan State University. There were no classes on being an entrepreneur yet, and MSU actually sent me a letter telling me I couldn’t run a business out of my dorm room.
When I graduated, all my friends went off to get jobs, but I stayed in East Lansing to try to build my own thing. It was the only way I knew how to be.
2. What has been your biggest challenge in being an entrepreneur/startup?
I have too many interests and can see so many problems to be solved, that it’s a constant battle to keep my mind focused and not try to do too many things.
3. What are you most proud of?
Being extremely resourceful is what I’m most proud of.
